Tignes was the setting for the speed events of this round of the World Para Alpine Skiing World Cup. This high altitude French resort has seen 6 metres of snow fall in just the one month of January and mother nature was going to show us who was in charge this week.

33 imagesThere would be no shortage of snow in Tignes during this World Para Alpine Skiing World Cup! It just kept on falling.....for days! A call to arms was raised and the coaches from all teams manifested to dig out the team carpark! I grabbed the opportunity to photograph it and hitched a ride in a snowcat plowing the snow out of the carpark. This lead to me getting another ride in a snowcat in the evening, but this time to head up on to the competition piste to see how it would be bashed and groomed into condition. Little did I realise just how much snow there really was up there! 28 imagesFinally the weather improved. The sun came out and the sky was that deep Alpine blue that every skier longs for. Everyone was summoned to get stuck in installing nets, shifting snow and bashing and grooming the competition piste de Lognan into racing conditions. Yet despite the immense efforts of everyone involved the race jury concluded, mid-morning, that the snow was too soft for speed events to be safely run on and had to cancel the entire competition as a result. Too much snow!
