2018 World Para Nordic and Biathlon World Cup, Vuokatti, Finland

4 galleries

The last job of the year. Working with the German Para Nordic and Biathlon team in Finland. We were all in Vuokatti for the 2018 World Para Nordic / Biathlon World Cup. I was there to take photos for the German team - from training to behind the scenes to competition action. What a first visit to Finland this was to be for me! :-)

Having just arrived by bus from Kajaani airport way up in the North of Finland I was straight into a team meeting. With everyone present it was the perfect opportunity to take portraits of all the team members. So we turned the meeting room into a makeshift studio!

Cloudy skies were to be the theme for the next few days. With the winter sun already not rising that much and for very long light would be an issue...the clouds didn't help! Anyway what followed was a great day of middle distance biathlon and a couple of podiums for the German team.

Today was exceptionally cold! We measured that it was at least 5 degrees colder than the 15th December making it about -12degC...well it truly felt like that. Today was the cross country sprint event. This is the event to keep everyone on their toes as it is fast! And when you get into the semis and the finals things are really flying, but hey, moving fast in cold weather is the perfect way to keep warm! The sprint races were also the perfect opportunity for me to try and get photos of all the athletes in this World Cup....

After two days of racing we had a day of training. This was the perfect day for me to enjoy more behind the scenes stuff and also to be able to work down the shooting range - and infront of the V.I biathletes for some shots I would not be able to get in competition. I still had to keep a safe distance for the other classifications as it didn't bare thinking of being struck by a stray bullet! Still, we did have control over where the shooting was happening, mostly, and so it was possible to enjoy a greater degree of freedom around the biathletes. Worked on some special requests with some of the athletes, too. Be sure to check out the great sportraits I did with Andrea Eskau!
